Boundaries: Staying Pure in
Your Teenage Years
Can Teens Stay Pure in Today’s Culture?
As teen pregnancies
reach their all time high and STD’s in teens are as common as STD’s in adults, the topic of purity is growing.
This epidemic is very alarming. There is an old saying that goes, “What one generation allows in moderation, the next
allows in excess.” That is a scary thought looking at this generation’s lack of sexual purity, can
you imagine how the next generation will look like in matters of sexuality. It is time that we stop this downward spiral from
happening! Author Becky Legatt believes that teens can stay pure in today’s culture, if they are equipped.
In football, the coach does not expect his team to win if he has not properly prepared them in the sport of football.
As parents, teachers, and youth leaders, we cannot expect our teens to stay pure if we do not properly prepare them to walk
in purity. In her new book, Boundaries: Staying Pure in Your Teenage Years (Anomalos Publishing 2009), Becky tells her own
story with her struggle in purity and explores the topic of purity, according to how God design it. Becky helps
students set up a game plan for their walk in purity through: practical advice in dating, teaching students the importance
of communication in relationships, and equipping students with boundaries worksheets for students to complete.
Teenagers are at the stage where they no longer believe something because their parents told them or their Sunday school teacher
told them. They believe something because they have discovered the truth for themselves. Teenagers need to know
why we believe what we believe, so they can personalize it and believe it for themselves. Becky states, “The only way
that boundaries will work in your relationships is if you actually want boundaries.” Once you cultivate
that desire in teens to stay pure, then you need to equip them to walk in that desire. If all you do is cultivate that desire
to stay pure it is like sending a baby into a pack of wolves and telling it to stay alive. As a parent of teenagers,
Becky understands the importance of equipping teenagers to walk in purity. Becky and family now reside in Abilene, TX as Junior
High Directors.
